- : Greetings.
- :
- : I have finally decided to get a V.34, 28.8 Kbps modem for my
- : 68030-equipped 2000.
- :
- : The Supra V.34 supports firmware upgrades and is cheaper (commonly less
- : than $200 in stores in the Los Angeles area).
- :
- : From what I have read, the USRobotics Sportster is supposed to have the
- : best connectivity (even allowing higher transfers speeds with some
- : manufacturers' modems than when they connect to others of their own type),
- : but I have read of problems when used with GPFax. Also, the version which
- : supports upgrading the firmware via loading a file is considerably more
- : expensive.
- :
- When I had to chose between these two modems a year ago, I was kind of
- flip flopping from one to another.
-
- Then I looked at what features each modem had.
- It suddenly became obvious to me that the Supra V.34 was the clear choice.
- Why? Well it has flash rom support. At first it did not have Amiga
- flashers, then it did have Amiga flashers. Now it has flashers that
- are administered using X-modem in an effort to make a generic flasher.
- I have flashed my Supra V.34 four times. The first firmware was not
- all that great but as I flashed the modem those four times I could see
- an improvement from flasher to flasher.
- If I went through that same process with the USR Sportster I would have
- paid $100 ($25 per rom).
-
- To me that has more than made up for the fact that the USR Sportster seems
- to give better throughput (at least in the computer rags).
- I would recommend that you look in the computer journals and read any
- review of these modems that you can find.
